It was a perfectly good walk today – reliable, steady, decent, stable. It was a solid walk. The weather was fine, a complete contrast to yesterday; it may even have been the hottest day of our travels yet. The landscape of the quiet Welsh farmland was pleasant enough. There were lots of fields. There were some mountains in the distance. There was an occasional farmhouse.

But nothing really happened.

We walked over some rolling green hills, we crossed some fields, we went down some lanes. There were gates and stiles. We saw a lot of sheep. There were some more fields. We saw some more sheep.

So instead of a blow-by-blow description, here instead, are some interesting signs we saw –

Now we are in Wales the signs are also in Welsh, usually with the Welsh translation in first place.

We noticed that many of the signs had amusing googly-eyes.

How did this happen?

Louisa and I are both carrying a luxury item which is something we don’t really need but that makes us happy. We wonder if there is a phantom googly-eye walker with a bag of googly-eyes as their luxury item?

As well as Offa’s Dyke signs, some farmers also make negative Offa’s Dyke signs. Well there must be a balance in the Force. . .

In Monmouth, we noticed this pub with a faulty sign. Jamie, our friend who accompanied us yesterday, suggested last night when we were looking for somewhere to eat, that its lack of speedy repair reflected a lackadaisical approach to life, and therefore, we should not frequent the establishment.

We noticed this on the other side of the same pub as we left this morning. What do two faulty signs represent?

Many village pubs advertise by putting signs up on the walking paths near to them. This pub sign we saw today was very polite. They wanted you to visit, but not to waste your time. (Weirdly there was no mobile phone reception, so I’m not sure how you were going to ring?)

This was outside a very welcoming church we passed today and made us feel very happy. (We also had a cup of tea and left a donation)

And this was the best sign of the day, the pub where we are staying tonight, indicating that we had finished the walk for today.

I leave you with a photo spread of sheep of the day.

  1. Urk, a teaser for your audience!!! What are you luxury items??? Now I’m going to be speculating…

    1. Any guesses Matt? All I can say is one was too heavy and we posted it back to my parents and mine makes Nigel grumble about the weight I’m carrying, but Is getting lighter as the days go by!
